Choosing a Green Mattress that is Comfortable, Too

by | Jun 4, 2012 | Home And Garden

In recent years, becoming more environmentally conscious has become increasingly popular, in part because of the overwhelming scientific evidence that climate change is a reality and that it is likely a result of human consumption and behaviors. Whether you believe this or are more inclined to think that a majority of the world’s ecologists and biologists are mad scientists on the political left using scare tactics, accepting personal responsibility for one’s own carbon footprint is ever more fashionable.

The problem is that green alternatives often do not live up to the experiences that people have when using the products they’ve been accustomed to, eve when they are unhealthy or toxic. For instance, more meat lovers are likely to prefer a real steak or burger over any of the best tofu or soy counterparts for pretty obvious reasons. For many people, the experience of eating a soy burger doesn’t exactly match the pleasure of eating a hamburger. By the same token, many people may be afraid that sleeping on a bed that uses alternative materials will not match the experience of sleeping on a Tempur-Pedic mattress. Austin retailers who sell organic mattresses beg to differ.

Many different kinds and sizes of beds are available that match the comfort levels of a Tempur-Pedic mattress. Austin stores for years have been selling beds that do not have the toxic petrochemical compounds that comprise the memory foam in the traditional Tempur-Pedic mattress. Moreover, Austin outlets have memory foam beds not made from oil, but instead are naturally derived from soy and other plant materials. Sleeping on a non-toxic mattress that is just as comfortable as a traditional memory foam mattress is more or less a no-brainer for most people.

An additional benefit of using a natural, soy-based memory foam mattress is that no outgassing takes place, which means that no toxic, volatile, or harmful molecules will be emanating from the mattress the first six months you sleep on it. Moreover, whereas a Tempur-Pedic mattress will absorb and encase heat, organic natural memory foam mattresses allow for air circulation, and rather than trapping body heat, they maintain a more neutral and natural temperature. In this instance, not only is the copy better for you than the original, but actually provides better quality than the original, allowing for restful sleep that isn’t radiating back the heat from your body, making the mattress itself softer when it’s hot and harder when it’s cool.

It’s necessary to do some diligent research to make sure that the organic mattress you are considering to purchase is 100% organic. Some companies tend to “greenwash” their image in order to make a profit, and may sell only partially organic mattresses that retain toxins.
