Working as a life coach is a challenging yet rewarding career – it’s certainly not for everybody, but for those who succeed, it is well worth the effort! But how do you go about finding life coaching training, and what exactly is involved?
The Right Characteristics
In order to be a good life coach, you’ll need to be open-minded, an excellent communicator and willing to learn. Life experience is valued in this profession, but even if you’re young, there’s no need to worry. As long as you are a people person and genuinely want to help others, you can train to become a life coach.
What’s Involved
Professional life coaching training will usually involve some (or all) of the following:
- Public speaking practice and training, including help becoming an inspirational and motivational speaker
- Listening skills to allow you to assess each client’s individual needs and help them with their problems
- Problem solving
- Relationship building
- Decision making skills
Of course, there’s much more to it than this, but these are skills that you will learn during your training. It’s possible to take online distance learning courses or a local college course to become a life coach, but any expert will tell you that hands on experience is best – perhaps you could volunteer or take work experience with a local life coach whilst you study?
Setting up Practice
Once you’ve completed your training, the learning doesn’t end there. Life coaching training is an ongoing experience, and it’s a good idea to work with other, more experienced life coaches before you set up your own practice. Once you have several years of professional experience under your belt, you can consider going it alone.
Becoming a life coach will require a blend of training, experience and personal skills to ensure you become the best that you can be. This is a great field to work in for anyone who loves the feeling of helping others to transform their lives, and one of the most rewarding jobs around!
