The Process Of Perfect Book Binding

by | Sep 11, 2013 | Business

Bookbinding is an ancient craft; examples exist in museums today that date back millennia. Today books are printed and bound by the millions at a commercial level or hand bound for one off examples. Bookbinding can be accomplished in a number of different ways, but when it is finished the result is a stack of paper, tightly bound and covered.

Perfect bound book printing is just one of the binding methods. It is very popular for binding books which are less expensive such as instruction manuals that go with a piece of equipment or books which are being published by the author rather than a publishing house. Perfect binding is unlike binding where the pages are sewn into the book spine, a book which is perfect bound has the pages glued to the cover with a water-resistant adhesive.

The perfect bound book printing process is actually quite straightforward. The pages of the book are arranged in a perfect stack with all the pages aligned. In most cases, the binder will clamp the stack down at which time the glue is applied along the binding side of the pile. Once the glue has been applied to the book pages, a second course of adhesive is applied to the cover. When the binding process has been completed, the book is well presented with a flat spine.

Perfect binding can work just as well with recycled paper as it does with virgin paper; this makes the process ideal for paperback books as they are often printed on paper stock which is recycled. Other ideal candidates for perfect binding are school texts and workbooks as well as training manuals. Books of this nature are not frequently used and by nature must be produced at low cost.

Since the advent of the internet, it has become possible for budding authors to self publish their books. The volume of these books is low as well as varied. It is now possible to perfect bind quite heavy books, those that may be considered as “coffee table” books as perfect binding.
