Parent’s Invisalign Questions Answered

by | Oct 1, 2018 | Dental Care

While braces have been common among teenagers for years, times have changed. Nowadays, another option is available in teen Invisalign. This dental option involves removable aligners that do the same job as metal braces do. Many consider these aligners as more comfortable, easier to wear, and less noticeable than metal braces are. You may have a few questions about allowing your teen to choose Invisalign. We’ll answer some of these below.

How Does It Work?

With Invisalign, your teenager will use something similar to the plastic retainers often used after braces treatment. The aligners used with teen Invisalign put pressure on the teeth, which slowly shifts them into proper alignment. The aligners are swapped out every two weeks to continue moving the teeth. This can be slightly uncomfortable but less so than traditional braces.

How Much Does It Cost?

You may believe that Invisalign is more expensive than regular braces, and that was true in the past, but is not the case anymore. In many cases, Invisalign treatment costs about the same amount as traditional braces do if your insurance covers the treatment. Of course, it’s important to talk to your dentist to be sure of what the costs will be for you.

How Many Hours Do Aligners Need to Be Worn?

Your teenager will be expected to wear their aligners for at least 22 hours a day. They will be taken out of the mouth for cleaning and eating. At all other times the aligners should be in. There may be certain situations where the aligners need to be removed but at all other times they should be worn for the best results.

What If My Child Loses an Aligner?

It’s not unheard of for a teenager to take out the aligners for a meal at school and forget them or throw them away. If a set of aligners are lost, you should speak with your dentist to decide what to do. If your child was close to switching to new aligners, you may just swap out early and not need to worry about a replacement. If it hasn’t been long, a replacement may be ordered.
