The 101 on Fever: When High Is Too High

by | Jul 22, 2019 | Healthcare

One of the most rewarding experiences in life, parenting can also be highly stressful, especially when your little one has fallen ill. At My InstaDoc of Marlboro, we understand how frightening these moments can be, and do everything in our power to ensure that your child is safe and healthy. Whilst a premier provider of urgent care services, there will be times that our facility is underequipped to handle certain illness and injury, of which the following should help act as a guide.

What Is A Fever?

Evidenced by the burning heat that you feel on their forehead, a fever is often the result of your child’s body attempting to attack an invader. Also known as pyrexia, a fever in and itself is a crucial component to recovery and is not inherently a cause for concern. While letting a fever run its course can be recommended, certain ages and co-occurring symptoms necessitate prompt and professional care.

When Should I Take My Child To The ER?

In infants under six months old, a body temperature over 100.4 should be addressed without ado. Babies and toddlers up to three years old should be taken to the ER for a temperature over 102, while a child over three should visit a doctor for a 102 fever lasting two days or more. In all cases, fevers of lesser intensity accompanied by the following signs require immediate emergency attention:

  • Difficulty eating or keeping food and fluids down
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Difficulty waking up
  • Rash
  • Inconsolable (won’t stop crying)
  • Listless or lethargic
  • Abdominal pain
  • Stiff neck
  • Not up to date with immunizations
  • Febrile Seizure

More than anyone else, you know your child. If you feel that something is off, please contact your family doctor or visit your nearest walk-in clinic as soon as possible. A premier provider of urgent care services in and around Old Bridge, New Jersey, My Insta Doc Urgent Care Of Marlboro would be more than happy to investigate any and all concerns that you may have about your little one’s health.
