For any person that is in the market for a new retractable awning, it is always wise that he or she familiarize himself or herself with some of the terminology. There are not a lot of parts that go into the construction of the retractable awning, but each of these parts are very crucial to the function of the retractable awning. Making sure that each of these components are made of the highest quality in materials and construction will insure that the retractable awnings will last for a very long time.

Tubular Housing

One of the main parts of a retractable Suffolk awnings is the tubular housing. This is where the awning itself is rolled up. A fully enclosed tubular housing is one that should be preferred. The reason for this is that it completely protects the fabric of the awning when it is fully retracted. The enclosure keeps the fabric safe from the elements such as rain, snow, dirt, or other debris. This will help to ensure a longer life of the awning fabric.

Shock Absorbers

A shock absorber is a built in mechanism which helps to dampen the effects of strong winds and rain against the awning while it is fully extended. There is a variety of methods used to create this shock absorption action. One such example would be to use a chain link around the arms. This is a good choice because it can absorb the shock and is durable too.

Wiper Bars

The wiper bar is a mechanism that is installed around the mouth of the tubular housing. It keeps any dirt, grime, or other debris from getting retracted into the tubular housing. This wiper bar is typically made of a heavy plastic or rubber. It helps to make sure that the awning fabric lasts for a much longer period of time.

Motors

The electric motor system is what does the actual extending and retracting. These motors are surprisingly small and can accomplish the task without drawing much electrical power at all. Look for an electric motor system that is self lubricating. These motors tend to last much longer because there is no maintenance that is required.

Material

Finally, there is the fabric. There is a lot of technology that goes into the fabric of Suffolk awnings. The awning fabric is designed specifically for the outdoors and repels the elements.
