Four Questions to Ask Your Active Adult Living Community Administrator before Moving In

by | Dec 17, 2012 | Health Care

Although many seniors vow never to move into an active adult living community, it becomes a necessity quite often. But moving into an adult community doesn’t have to be a bad experience. In fact, if you choose the right one, the years you spend there could turn out to be the best years of your life. Here are some questions to ask the community’s administrator before moving in, to ensure you are choosing the right place.

What’s the age range of the residents?
Today’s active adult living community can have a wide range of residents. Some communities have lowered their admission age to 50. In effect, this means there could be residents who are 50 years old along with residents who are 90 years old. Before you choose which community to live in during your retirement years, find out the age range of the current residents. Is there a good mix? Are there many people there who are your age? Or will you be the only person there as young or as old as you are? Since you’ll want to socialize with others, it will be best to find a community that has several residents who are close to your age so you’ll enjoy making friends there.

Does it offer activities?
An active adult living community sometimes has the stigma of being a place where people simply grow old. While some facilities may be like that, you want to find one where you will stay young by participating in activities, mingling with friends, going on trips and doing other things other than simply staying in your room.

Will visitors feel welcomed?
Moving into a senior living community doesn’t mean that you won’t be able to see your family much anymore. If you choose the right place, your kids and grandkids will want to come visit you as often as possible. Does the place you are looking at have things to keep kids occupied during the visit? Some places offer swing sets, sandboxes and other amenities for children. Before you make your final decision on where to move into, make sure your visitors will feel welcomed so they will have an enjoyable experience every time they visit.

What’s the bottom line?
Most retirees are living on a fixed income. When you’re looking for a community that you can call home, the price is going to be a major factor in your decision. Can you afford to live there as long as you need to? Are there any other fees in addition to the monthly payment? These are things you’ll need to know so you can decide if you can afford to live in the community that you choose.
