There are many types of waterproof material in use today, some are new to the market whilst others have been around for decades. Waterproof material is commonly used for protection against adverse weather conditions such as heavy winds or by crew members working on board vessels at sea. Waterproof clothing can also be used for recreational activities whereby there is a need for protection against rain or water. Such clothing can come in the form of jackets, hats and overalls and are of great benefit to people at risk from water. It is certainly uncomfortable for clothing to become wet during a work activity or recreational activity and wet weather gear has become a necessity for people partaking in such activities. Waterproof materials work by forming a tight barrier between the user and the water. The fabric has an extremely tight membrane which prevents the water passing through the fabric.

Oilskin material

One of the oldest forms of waterproof material is oilskin. Oilskin is basically fabric that has been soaked and coated with oil and then dried. The oil forms a barrier between the person wearing the material and the rain or water. It has very good waterproof capabilities but can sometimes become heavy resulting in difficulty of movement for the occupant or fatigue if working excessively.

Vinyl material

Vinyl material is another form of waterproof material that has been around for decades and is considered to be one of the best waterproof materials available. Vinyl can be identified easily due its shiny finish and sleek look. Vinyl waterproof materials are usually used to make items such as waterproof covers and tend not to be utilised so much for wet weather gear and clothing.

Rubber

Rubber was used in the manufacturing of the earliest modern raincoats. It is mixed with a fabric, similar to the oilskin process, and this results in waterproof barrier being formed. Rubber, whilst having good waterproof properties, is not as strong as some of the more modern waterproof materials and has been replaced by materials such as Gore-Tex.

Gabardine

Gabardine is very popular for use in the manufacturing of rain coats and trench coats that are required to be light whilst at the same time retaining their waterproof capabilities. It is made from a thin cotton twill combined with dyed yarn which gives it its waterproof property.

Gore-Tex

Gore-Tex is without doubt the most popular waterproof material in use today. It is a relatively new concept compared to the other materials but has found its popularity from its use in the manufacturing of coats, jackets, gloves and boots. Many people who work in wet weather or adverse weather conditions choose Gore-Tex because of its excellent waterproof protection capabilities and its strength.
