When household residents want to start replacing their old home decor with more upscale furnishings, they may decide to shop for teak bedroom furniture. Teak platform beds bring a streamlined, modern look to these rooms. Dressers and nightstands made from this wood also are available.
While browsing through the store’s online images, the shopper will notice the variations in headboard sizes and designs. Some are tall and some so short they barely rise above the pillows. It might make one wonder what the point is of having a headboard on teak bedroom furniture. Do these devices serve any functional purpose?
Today, headboards are included mainly for decorative reasons. Some of the more elaborate ones have posts that people might use to hang up their bathrobes or pajamas. Some have shelves, drawers and areas that function as nightstands. The head of a bed typically is placed against a wall, but a headboard prevents pillows from dropping off the end if the bed is located elsewhere in the room.
Originally, headboards were used to block cold air connected with poorly insulated walls. These devices had been constructed of wood since ancient times for this purpose. Not only did this make the bed warmer for sleeping, it also allowed people to comfortably lean against the wood while conversing or eating.
In the 1600s, upholstered headboards became popular as people realized these designs were especially cozy for leaning on. Upholstered models are still made today and can be combined with a platform bed and teak furniture.
