Transwomen are individuals who were assigned male at birth but who identify with a female gender identity. Since gender is a spectrum, some transwomen choose to socially transition while others choose either a partial or full medical transition. This may include one or all of the following: estrogen therapy, anti-androgens (reduce testosterone), orchiectomy, breast augmentation, bottom surgery, body feminization surgery and facial feminization surgery.
These surgeries can have a profound improvement in the self-esteem, confidence and quality of life of a transwoman because her body is more aligned with how she identifies.
Estrogen and anti-androgen therapy or HRT (Hormone Replacement Therapy) is one of the first protocols after therapy for the transwoman undergoing a medical transition. Estrogen helps the transwoman achieve a feminine looking physique by decreasing muscle mass and re-distribution body fat to areas that are typical for the female body.
Breast augmentation is one of the most commonly performed surgeries for a transwoman. During this procedure, implants can be placed above or below the muscle. Additionally, they can be inserted in various places such as the armpit, areola or below the breast. There are several types of implants, including saline and silicone options. There are various “shapes” such as smooth/round and teardrop or anatomically correct. Your surgeon will explain and discuss these options with you to help determine the best solution for you.
Additionally, facial feminization surgery (FFS) is one of the most common transwoman surgeries performed. May transwomen opt for this surgery prior to any others simply because it has profound results on helping them blend into society as the female they identify with. This surgery is actually comprised of several facial surgeries that include rhinoplasty, forehead shortening, adams apple reduction, cheek augmentation, and chin/jaw reduction. Combined, these surgeries can achieve a soft, feminine looking face.
Body feminization surgery (BMS) is targeted liposuction to achieve a feminine and tight mid-section as well as adding fat around the thighs and buttocks.
Some transwomen choose to have bottom surgery, also known as genital confirmation surgery (GCS). In general, gender confirmation surgery includes several procedures performed at once. The testicles and part of the penis are removed, and this tissue is used to create fully-functioning external female genitalia (vagina, labia, and clitoris). Most commonly, a technique referred to as “penile inversion” is performed, in which the penis is essentially turned inside out to form the inner walls of the vagina. A small piece of the head of the penis is then used to create a clitoris. Outer labia are formed from the testes, and inner labia are formed using penile tissue.
