Learning a Breathing Technique

Learning a breathing technique to control the way your body automatically processes the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide has proven to be beneficial to many people for a variety of reasons. Whether one suffers from a symptom such as sleep apnea or asthma, or if one is merely seeking optimal health, using a breathing technique that works is a useful tool.

Many people find this option to be preferable to taking drugs or undergoing surgery for conditions that cause various uncomfortable and painful symptoms. A breathing technique such as the Breathing Normalization method has been known to alleviate anxiety and stress, which in turn has a positive effect on other physical and psychological ailments.

Other symptoms, such as hyperventilation syndrome, asthma, panic attacks, snoring, migraine headaches, allergies, adenoids, sleep apnea, and others have also shown to decrease in intensity when the person who suffers from one or more of them begins a regimen of a proven breathing technique.

We obviously do not consciously control our breathing, but we can program the way that we breathe so that we begin to breathe in a way that is more natural to our optimal health. Most of us pick up bad breathing habits without being aware of it, and it can have an adverse effect on various bodily systems, leading to the various symptoms listed above.

The end result of learning a breathing technique is one’s own optimal health, which, according to many practitioners, means having the right amount of carbon dioxide present in the body in order to regulate the amount of oxygen delivered to various bodily organs and systems (a phenomenon known as Bohr’s effect). We usually think in terms of having enough oxygen, but the crux of the matter in this case is having enough carbon dioxide, which regulates oxygen delivery. You can have millions of soldiers in an army, but without the right number of commanders to tell them what to do, they are useless, and if you have too many commanders, chaos ensues.

So learning a breathing technique basically just means learning how to the amount of air that we take in from moment to moment in order to increase the amount of carbon dioxide in the lungs and consequently, oxygenation of the whole body.

When we can breathe well, we will breathe with ease and gentleness, and be able to sleep quietly and wake up in the morning genuinely refreshed.
