Choosing to live off campus has a variety of benefits that you can’t get while living on campus, such as larger space. On-campus living provides conveniences such as access to meals and walking access to classes; however, you’re somewhat limited on setting your own rules and being able to get the full experience of living away from home. If you have opted for the University Of Alabama off campus housing, it’s important to understand that the decision comes with a great deal of responsibility. Here are a few tips to make the process of searching for living off-campus easier and less stressful.
Have a Budget
Before you begin your search for off campus housing it is important to create a budget. Living on campus means you don’t have to worry about things like utilities and weekly grocery shopping, so you’ll need to budget for these things each month. Your budget should include rent, utilities, transportation, food and laundry. It’s also important to keep in mind that before you can sign a lease, you’ll need to have the security deposit, first month’s rent and if you have a pet, you’ll be responsible for pet fees as well.
Do Your Homework
Before signing a lease, you’ll need to do some research on the area you are considering as well as the apartments you are interested in. Make sure the apartment is in a safe area and within reasonable distance to campus. The size of the apartment you choose will depend on various factors, such as whether you intend to have a roommate or not. If you already have a roommate in mind, you should both go do a walk-through of the apartment together. Before signing a lease make sure everything works, including the lights, locks and appliances. Whether you will be walking, driving or relying on public transportation, be sure to check the commute time from the apartment to the campus.
Renter’s Insurance
Living in your own apartment means you will be responsible for all of your belongings and renter’s insurance ensures your belongings will be covered should they be stolen or damaged. Many apartments that offer University of Alabama off campus housing require you to carry renter’s insurance as part of the leasing agreement, so be sure to talk to the property manager to determine if it is a requirement and for insurance company recommendations.
It is extremely important that you don’t sign a lease until you have thoroughly read it and if you will have a roommate; it’s recommended that all roommates be listed on the lease. This will protect you should they decide to move and leave you with damages.
