Restaurant insurance may be complicated in nature because of the multitude of things that need coverage. There is liability with food, the patrons, property and crime losses that may be sustained. That is not being paranoid; it is being realistic in considering the losses that could be knocking on the business owner’s door.
There are a variety of restaurant type establishments that need insurance coverage, which could include a food bar, a diner, sandwich shop, the ever popular deli, the coffee shop and many more. Any establishment that offers food for sale would be considered a restaurant.
There are basic insurance coverage types and then there are extra ones the business owner can add to his basic policy. Every option will not be applicable to every restaurant owner so all options will not need to be purchased to have sufficient coverage.
Business Liability
Restaurant insurance coverage must include the business liability portion because of the high volume of patrons that will pass through the establishment. The business liability covers lawsuits filed against the restaurant for patron injury because of a fall, food poisoning and even because a patron believes his experience at the restaurant was ruined because of a particular waiter, a long wait time or whatever other disgruntlement that might arise.
Falls and food poisoning are probably the highest liability for the restaurant owner so for these two alone, the coverage must be substantial because both are serious events. Business liability will cover financial loss of the patron or other third-party and also covers physical loss.
Property Loss
Property loss is evident for restaurant insurance. The loss may be from fire, wind or even when a patron destroys any of the property in the restaurant. This is not only loss in the building itself but also loss of furniture, dishes, tables and other furnishings. This could also be coverage for the food inventory the restaurant will always have if it becomes ruined due to a disaster.
Crime Coverage
Crime coverage in restaurant insurance will cover any type of burglary by patrons, thieves or the employees. Since there are three types of burglars, crime coverage will be a definite necessity for the restaurant owner. Hopefully, the employees will all be honest and not skim money from the cash register, but more than likely in the history of the restaurant, there will be the occasional thief.
